Summer Learning Journey Day 2 Activity 2: Fern Uniforms

In today's post I am going to show you pictures of three different sports teams in NZ that have the word 'fern' in it. The reason I am doing this is because ferns are the most common plant found in forests, they are iconic to NZ, and many teams are named after it.  I am also going to tell you which one is my favourite.

My favourite uniform is the White Ferns uniform because it is quite colourful compared to the other ones, and it has a multi coloured fern. I also like it because it says 'New Zealand', so it represents our country, and people will know this amazing uniform belongs here. Even though this seems so straight forward, I had a hard time deciding this because all of them are so simple, yet so effective.

Summer Learning Journey Day 2 Activity 1: Tāne Mahuta

Kia Ora followers,

In NZ, we have many endemic trees, plants and animals, which means that they are native to NZ, and they don't grow or live anywhere else in the world. Many places have endemic creatures and wildlife, and they are special to the people who are from there, or live in that place.

Tāne Mahuta (Largest Endemic Tree in NZ) is named as 'The Lord of the Forest' if you translate it. I would love to visit this tree, and I have a couple of reasons on why.

1. I really want to visit this tree because it may be the only chance, and only moment, for me to see the real size and height of it

2. Based on the last reason, all of the images and photos that have been taken aren't the real size, and the photo's don't show the true monstrosity, but real life can.

3. It's such a cool experience, and you can learn so much about NZ and Maori culture. For example, the name Tāne Mahuta can teach you a new name.


4. I want to compare this tree to other trees in the world, and see if there are other trees which are the same height, or ones that are similar looking.

Summer Learning Journey Activity 3: Stay Cybersmart!

Today we are going to discuss internet safety. Most people don't know the bad things that could happen to them when they use the internet. This is a serious issue that we have to inform to people. Here is a piece of work that I've worked on to show people how to stay safe on the internet, and to be cybersmart.








This is very small, and may not seem like a lot, but it can be the biggest impact on you safety. You never know when someone sneaky could be finding out all of your information.

Summer Learning Journey Activity 2: What's special about my hometown?

Have you ever wondered about your hometown, and felt like there's something special about it that no other place has? Well, there is always something special about every persons hometown, but today we are going to discuss my hometown, and what I feel is special about it.


I cant exactly say what my hometown is, because my whole family from back in the times are all from Nepal. I wasn't born in Nepal, but in Logan, Utah. Currently, I am living in Auckland, and my family is not planning anytime soon to leave. I am going to choose Logan, as I was born there.


Something special to me in Logan, is that busses are all free. Whenever you wanted to be dropped off somewhere, you just wait at the nearest bus stop, and hop on the bus. If you needed to stop, you pull a thick, yellow string that signals the driver to drop you off. Another thing that is special about my hometown, is that all of the mailboxes are in one place, but everyone has a unique key to access their personal mailbox. Some places in Logan have houses which are arranged in a circle, and where I lived, there was an astonishing park in the centre. On the sides, there were rusty, old gates which led to other houses. Another thing that is special to me, is it snows gracefully, it is peaceful and calm, there are lots of splendid rivers and lakes, and its like everyone is beloved family with each other. The population is 51,115 people, such a small population! Oh, Logan is just natural beauty.

Summer Learning Journey Activity 1: Top 3 fun facts about New Zealand

Today we are going to circulate around NZ. There is so many fun facts and cool structures and places that you can find in NZ. Many of the readers who read books and articles about Maori Mythology should know the story of when Maui fished up the North Island. If you don't know the story, here is a brief description of it.

It all started off when Maui's ( a Maori demigod ) brothers planned to go fishing, but they refused to let Maui on their canoe. Maui really wanted to show his great fishing skills and go fishing with his brothers, so Maui stayed up the whole night and hid in the canoe, with his magical jawbone from his grandmother.

The next day, the brothers went out into the sea, but when they were reasonably far from home, Maui jumped out from the canoe and started pedalling out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  The brothers protested for him to stop, but he kept going. Maui threw his magical jawbone and fished out the whole North Island. Maui told his brothers to not even touch the fish, because he wanted to leave it smooth, but when Maui left to go get something, the brothers hacked and sliced and cut the fish so it was bumpy like land.

That is why we have mountains and hills, they are all of the cuts and bumps. The North island is the fish, and the South Island is his canoe.

Top 3 Facts:

1. The reason we have Aotearoa as our Maori name for NZ is because it's definition is 'the land of the long white cloud'. There is a whole different story as to why it is called that, here is a link to the story.


2. NZ was the first country to allow womans right to vote. This happened during 1893. Here is an article about this amazing right to vote.


3. In the whole entire place of NZ, there is not one snake, and the land is also made up of 30% forest.



Bonus Fact: The big tower structure 'The Sky tower' is the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere. It stands at 328 meters high!

My Birthday Party!

Hello fellow bloggers,

On October the 2nd, it was my birthday, and I turned 11! I invited my 2 neighbors, and 2 others who were Nepali friends of mine. We together had such a blast. When we first got together, we ate some chips. Then my younger brother, Vitaraag, and the other boys played cricket while my Dad and I went to the store to buy extra things for the party. We bought flour, cornstarch, party hats and blowers, candles, the cake, etc. When my dad reached the back of the store, he found an aisle filled with masks. He told me, "choose any one you want, and I will get it for you." I was so lucky that day! After shopping for all of the extras, we headed back home and started with our first activity - making Oobleck!!


Oobleck is a non - Newtonian fluid, which basically means it not a solid, nor a liquid. If you apply a lot of pressure, it resists and feels as hard as a rock. But if you relax and rest your hand, your hand will sink right through the mixture. To make Oobleck, you will only need water and cornstarch.  Just mix them together, and add colors if you want. All of played with it for ages! When we were finished, our hands were dyed so many weird colors. The reason why I like Oobleck was because it's so gooey and sticky, but sometimes is hard and strong. It's just so addicting. When the boys finished, they went to the side of our yard and played dodge ball, while the girls continued playing with the Oobleck. Next, we went on with the other activity, which was making homemade playdough!

All we did was mix flour, water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring. It felt very nice and soft, and it was also very mouldable! Some people added way to much water, and it was a sticky mess. But we added more flour, and it went well. I loved the playdough because it felt very smooth and squishy.

After that we ate pizza, chips, chocolate, ice cream and much more. Soon enough we were playing tag, and the parents started rolling in, picking up their children. At the end, when the last person left, we looked outside at our mess, and boy was it dirty! But me and my younger brother kept playing with our Oobleck and playdough. Soon, it was night and we went to bed, feeling good about that day.

Child Tooth Decay is increasing

Today I have read a Kiwi Kids News article about child tooth decay. Toddlers who are younger than 3 have to get all their teeth removed, because their teeth are that bad. It states that over the past 15 years, child tooth decay is increasing, from before being 4500 in hospital, to now, 7500. In my opinion, I think that this is a world tragedy, as it can affect the child's self esteem, and also ruin their future, (your smile is your future.) Families sometimes find it hard to afford oral hygiene products, so they are forced to share 1 toothbrush over all the people who have to brush in the house. Poor people are especially the big problem. Having all the unhealthy, junk food cheap in all the stores, is not only tempting, but also the easiest to afford for those who desperately need to eat. These people also can't get to the hospital in time because they most likely need to pay for transport.

The government has offered $2.5 million a year for helping young childrens oral health.
