Summer Learning Journey Week 4 Day 3 Activity 1: Predator Free 2050

Namaste fellow blogging world,
Currently in NZ we are trying to get rid of as many predators as possible. They are harming our environment and native animals, so by 2050, many NZ organisations are hoping that our country will be predator free.

Out of these 3 videos, I am going to choose 1 which I like the best.

I personally like the 1st video the best because it isn't someone who works for a big, pricey companies. I'm not saying that companies aren't a good solution, because they are, but you can easily copy what the first man did in your backyard. All you need is a problem, because without a problem, you can't have a solution. If you watch the video, it all started off when a normal person just trying to find a nice home, but soon realised that his new house was infested with pests such as possums and rats. After that, he thought that if he can get rid of all of the pests in his area, he can help the environment go back to normal.

He had made a trap which doesn't have food, but has different noises which attract animals. His way of thinking was that after the animals have had a nice full meal, they want to talk and interact with other animals.

Other companies / organisations are now working alongside him because of his creative idea.

I hope you've enjoyed reading my blog post about helping the environment. Thank you for coming to my blog. Please give me feedback or if you have any questions, please ask. What will you do to get rid of predators? Tell me in the comments.

Blog you later!

  1. Hi Gargee,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team, reading your blog from my home in Canada. We have invasive species here too and so I'm very impressed, as you are, by those who find a problem and then try to solve it humanely and carefully.

There's no easy way to eliminate invasive species, unfortunately. It takes a lot of ingenuity and work. We have a trailer (a camper van) on a campsite in the woods about an hour's drive from our home. A few years ago we arrived at the trailer and found that it had been infested by Red Squirrels. These are small, attractive little animals but they can make one huge mess inside someone's home!!! They chew through walls to get into sheltered locations where they can spend the cold winter, bringing with them hundreds of cones and seeds and nuts that they collect in order to have food. They build nests inside in the spring for birthing their babies. And that's another problem for home owners because 1 squirrel becomes 2 squirrels, becomes many more squirrels.

We've had to have our trailer sealed with a wire mesh all along the under-carriage so that the squirrels couldn't chew their way in. We haven't been entirely successful, but we've had far fewer issues since we did that.

I hope you haven't had to deal with an invasive species in your home!!!
And I hope that you're having a really fun summer!!!

    I'm enjoying your blog!

    Cheers,

    Leslie

Nia here, I enjoyed reading your blog post and the videos. I would have to agree with you that number 1 was the best but it was very hard to choose from. Thank you for your very kind comment on my blog.

Would you want to be like a professor that finds ways to stop pests?

    Keep the great blogging up.

    Bye Nia
