Summer Learning Journey Activity 1: Top 3 fun facts about New Zealand

Kia Ora Bloggers,

Today we are going to circulate around NZ. There is so many fun facts and cool structures and places that you can find in NZ. Many of the readers who read books and articles about Maori Mythology should know the story of when Maui fished up the North Island. If you don't know the story, here is a brief description of it.

It all started off when Maui's ( a Maori demigod ) brothers planned to go fishing, but they refused to let Maui on their canoe. Maui really wanted to show his great fishing skills and go fishing with his brothers, so Maui stayed up the whole night and hid in the canoe, with his magical jawbone from his grandmother.

The next day, the brothers went out into the sea, but when they were reasonably far from home, Maui jumped out from the canoe and started pedalling out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  The brothers protested for him to stop, but he kept going. Maui threw his magical jawbone and fished out the whole North Island. Maui told his brothers to not even touch the fish, because he wanted to leave it smooth, but when Maui left to go get something, the brothers hacked and sliced and cut the fish so it was bumpy like land.

That is why we have mountains and hills, they are all of the cuts and bumps. The North island is the fish, and the South Island is his canoe.

Top 3 Facts:

1. The reason we have Aotearoa as our Maori name for NZ is because it's definition is 'the land of the long white cloud'. There is a whole different story as to why it is called that, here is a link to the story.

2. NZ was the first country to allow womans right to vote. This happened during 1893. Here is an article about this amazing right to vote.

3. In the whole entire place of NZ, there is not one snake, and the land is also made up of 30% forest.

Bonus Fact: The big tower structure 'The Sky tower' is the tallest structure in the southern hemisphere. It stands at 328 meters high!

That's it for now bloggers. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If you would like to give me feedback, don't hesitate to give me a comment

  1. Kia ora Gargee,

Congratulations on completing your first activity for the 2019 Summer Learning Journey programme. Once again, I am gobsmacked at the effort you have put into another incredible post. I love the way you have shared the Maui myth on your blog for other students to read and then gone into depth with every fact you have shared. You have excellent grammar and have put your post together in a fantastic way. Well done Gargee.

I am so proud of our little country to be the first in the world to allow woman the right to vote. This shows that woman in our country were strong and bold to make such a huge movement, influencing other countries to follow in our foot steps. I think that this is an important fact about Aotearoa and I am proud you have included this in your post. Maybe one day you will be a woman making a difference like this in our world. What would you attempt to change in this world?

Thank you for sharing these incredible facts and putting great detail into your work. I am excited to see more incredible posts from you over the summer. I am sure there will be a good competition between you and Vitaraag this year.

I hope you are enjoying your holidays so far,
    Megan :)

    1. Hello Megan,

I am very excited to be participating in the Summer Learning Journey this year, so I put a lot of effort in my first post, but it was a lot of fun! If I had one thing to try and change in the world, it would be to try to find cures for many types of illnesses and diseases.

Thank you so much for supporting everyone who participates.

    2. Hello again Gargee,

It is so great to hear how excited you are to complete activities for the Summer Learning Journey. This has made my day, as that is what we were hoping for. The design team have worked hard to create a fun programme. So when students put in a lot of effort when doing the activities, then we know the the design teams hard work has paid off.

Wow, that is an incredible aspiration to have. What has inspired you to want to find a cure for illnesses?

It is absolutely my pleasure to support you all on this incredible journey.

      Keep up the awesome work,
      Megan :)
