Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 2 Activity 3: Weirder Than Fiction

Salaam bloggers,

In today's activity, everything is going to be strangely weird. Isn't that weird? We are going to have a nice discussion about weird plants in the world as there are more than 298,000 different species of plants which live in and out of water. I am going to find 2 different plants which are on this bizarre list and find 3 differences and 3 similarities between both of them.

White Baneberry Plant:

3 differences:

1. This plant has small white fruit with 1 black dot on each one. They are called a Doll's eye sometimes because of this. These fruit are also very toxic

2. It has a thick, red stem which is an extremely unusual but fascinating in nature.

3. The White Baneberry plant stands at 60 cm high.

Venus Flytrap:

3 differences:

1. The Venus flytrap can eat small insects and digest them in a span of 10 days.

2. These are found in the Eastern Carolia in mostly wet inhabitats.

3. This plant also leaves its mouth wide open for it's prey to enter, and it closes

Similarities Between Venus Flytrap and The White Baneberry:

1. Both of these plants have stems

2. You can't eat or consume any part of the plants

3. These plants both look very unusual in nature

  1. Kia Orana Gargee,

I appreciate the time and effort you have taken with this activity. I can tell you’ve done lots of research and tried to think carefully about the similarities and differences between your chosen plants. You have actually included six differences, ka pai!

Perhaps next time you could elaborate further on some of the similarities you found between the two plants. Why can't you consume any parts of the plant?

I had the chance to see and feel a Venus Flytrap in person. It was kept on a window sill so it could get lots of sunshine as well as insects that fly in to the house through the window. I remember putting the tip of my finger near the opening and it squeezing shut, it didn’t hurt me at all.. It actually kinda tickled!

    Toe feiloa’i fo’i.

    Cia.
