Summer Learning Journey Week 3 Day 3 Activity 1: Bird of the year!

Kia Ora bloggers,
NZ is an amazing place where there are so many different native birds which thrive and live life happily. Sadly, some birds are in serious trouble of being extinct. For example, there was once a time when there were 12 million kiwis all over NZ. Now thinking of that, it seems impossible that that was even true. 1/3 of our birds in NZ are getting close to being extinct, forever.

But on the other hand, there is a big event that happens every year which people choose which native NZ bird is their favourite. For 2018, it was the kereru, or the woodpigeon. I am going to go through the website which the votes are found, and try to find a bird that catches my eye.

Rock Wren:

The rock wren only lives in the south island and is a very small, cute bird. It lives primarily in the Tasman mountains of the northwest Nelson, the Southern Alps, and the Victoria Range of West land.

These cute birds eat mainly insects, and also eat nectar from flax flowers. They even eat different fruit from coprosma species. The insects they eat are flies, spiders, moths, beetles and scale insects.

It has a small patch of yellow fur underneath their belly and have a small, short but black beak. Over it's eye it has a white stripe which gives this bird a very cool effect. You will definitely not mistaken this bird if you know what it looks like!

This bird is a highly endangered species which is at high risk of getting extinct forever. Especially our commonly known native birds, these birds are only in NZ and will not appear in different countries as they are only found here.

  2. You have chosen a native bird; the Rock Wren (Pīwauwau). I can see that you have done a bit of research to find out how and where the Pīwauwau lives. I didn't know they were only found in the South Island.

It's saddening to know that these striking little birds are in trouble in the wild. Hopefully Aotearoa's conservation efforts succeed in helping these little birds thrive and survive. Perhaps next time you could talk about ways people can help support these organisations and our native birds. Can you think of a way you might be able to help?

This reminds me of the Kākāpō, another endangered native bird. They are one of my favourite animals, I am hopeful one day that I'll be able to see one in person. There is a way you can 'adopt' them to help support the work conservationists are doing to help them thrive. You don't get to adopt the actual animal, what happens is you donate money and you get updates about a particular Kākāpō as well as a few goodies. It's a pretty awesome idea!

    Another good post, ka pai.

    Toe feiloa'i fo'i,

    Cia.
