Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 5 Activity 3: Protecting the Great Barrier Reef

Hello bloggers,

In Australia there is the worlds largest coral reef, which is surprisingly made up of 2900 reefs! People in space can even view it because it's that big. Living in the east coast of Australia, it is believed to be millions of years old, and it's always been healthy. But sometimes things can't always be bright, because this has changed drastically over 30 years.

Since being alive for so long, some the colours have faded and been completely bleached for some odd reason. Different parts of the reef have also been destroyed by cyclones, people, and new but invasive animals which damage the reef. The Australian government are trying to protect the reef, but are spending too much, that they seriously need some help with fundraising! I have to come up with an idea on how to fundraise money so they can continue to make the reef live.

Some ideas on fundraising is you can just ask people for $15 each to help the fund, and make big posters and signs asking for whether you want to pay $15, or lose our reef. This would grab everybody's attention as they want to continue to have everybody think of their country as an amazing place with the largest reef. You can also go around everyone giving out flyers with information about this to inform people about this, and maybe teachers can teach it in school. People can even ask for an opinion about this, and each positive answer is a token, every token counts as $1. When you've asked enough people, then you show this token count to big sponsoring companies that could possibly give that much money which is equivalent to the tokens. You can also reach 100 signatures and show it to a big company too.

I hope you've enjoyed reading my blog post about the Great Barrier Reef. Thank you for finding my blog. Please give me feedback or if you have any questions, please ask. Do you have an idea on how to fundraise money? Tell me in the comments.

Blog ya later!

  1. Hi Gargee,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

You've come up with some good ideas as to how to raise funds to do protective work on behalf of the Reef. Certainly spreading the word about the problem is important, so having this discussed in schools and in the community is a good idea!

Making the fund that you're asking quite low, $1.00, would make it quite affordable for people to buy 'tokens' and, hopefully, an organization would match the funds, as you say.

These days it seems to be very important to get industries/businesses involved in contributing large amounts of money to causes like this. Since they're often part of the problem, it's great if they're also part of the solution. Good thinking!

I hope you'll continue to learn about all of these issues as you go through school. I think you'll be a great advocate one day!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
