Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 5 Activity 1: Overfishing

Hallo fellow bloggers,

Did you know that there is a very expensive fine you have to pay for fishing too much fish? In New Zealand, fishing is a very common thing to do for BBQ's and picnics, or for just everyday. Sadly, sometimes people fish for too many fish and then leave the place without having enough fish to stay in the ocean. As you know, this is very bad for our future on Earth. If this ever happens to any fishing place, it is called 'overfishing'. People have to close these areas so not even commercial people can use it. After that, if anyone sneaks to try and get some fish, they are fined and have to pay at most $100,000. Today's discussion is going to be about whether I think this rule is appropriate or not.

I think this rule is totally appropriate for this case because as Earth progresses, global warming gets worse, sea life may not flourish and stop. We have to protect our sea life so that it can stay here for as long as possible. One day we may have no fish, you never know what can happen. You won't be able to have your fish dinner or whatever you eat it with. I also think this is a good rule because fish have a life too, and you have to respect the fact that they have to suffer in order to make us you happy, so don't be greedy and take all of them. We have to respect them like they do to us, and let them live in peace.

I hope you've enjoyed reading my blog post about fish. Thank you for coming to my blog. Please give me feedback or if you have any questions, please ask. Do you like this rule? Tell me in the comments.

Blog ya later!

  1. Hi Gargee,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

You've given a very good argument for supporting the fine for over-fishing. It can be very hard for people to understand that some fish stocks are getting low, but that is what is happening. So... we have to give those fish time to reproduce and increase in number so that the population is healthy once again.

We have a big area off the coast of Canada called The Grand Banks. For hundreds of years people fished there and caught multitudes of fish. Unfortunately, about 10 years ago it was discovered that the cod stocks were dangerously low - that means that there had been too many cod caught and they were almost all gone. Our fishermen had to stop fishing for cod for 10 years before the population grew to the point where we could start to fish for them again.

Part of the problem is that some fishing companies use huge boats that scoop up everything that's in the ocean and so they take more than they need and they damage the ocean floor in the process. Technology can be helpful but it can also be harmful!!

I'm glad that you're working so hard on these activities and I will continue to enjoy reading your blog.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
