Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 5 Activity 2: The Black Drain

Kia Ora blogging world,

Many of NZ's rivers are polluted due to rubbish companies putting their rubbish in lakes, sewers leading into rivers and so on. Some filthy rivers are the Tarawera River and Bay of plenty region. I am going to find 2 other polluted lakes/rivers and get some info about if they're being cleaned.

Hawkes Bay:

Hawkes bay is in the North Island, but not in Auckland. It is on the side of the North Island (right) and if you want to see here is a link to a map.  You can see it is on Hastings and Napier.

The main reason of why Hawkes bay is unswimmable is because of sewage waste. People who work for big ocean cleaning groups and articles have said that in about 2030, Hawkes Bay will be swimmable again due to the immense amount of cleaning that is happening. The cleaning that is happening is not stated exactly, but cleaning is happening. Here is an article of where I got this info from.

Lake Wairarapa:

Lake Wairarapa is located near the bottom of the North Island, around the area of where Pakuratahi Forest is. Here is a link to google maps to where it is.

Many people who are offering to clean up this tragedy say that Lake Wairarapa will probably never be once as clean as it was before because of the terrible life it's been through. Some people who are experts on this say that all of the lakes in Wairarapa will probably need to be cleaned for a century before you will be able to swim in it and call it clean. Cleaning in this water is happening, but it is going to be very difficult to get rid of it fast. Many Maori residents say they want to make the amount of time to be cut in half, but they don't know how. Some lakes here are even classified 'dead'. Here is another article where I got this info from.

I hope you've enjoyed reading my blog post about our precious lakes. Thank you for finding my blog. Please give me feedback or if you have any questions, please ask. Do you think that these lakes will ever get clean again? Tell me in the comments.

See ya later!

  1. Hi Gargee,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team.

You've done an excellent job of research 2 other bodies of water in or around New Zealand that are polluted.

The activity actually asked you to identify 2 rivers, but you've done such a thorough job of researching Lake Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay that we won't worry about that.

It's heart-lifting to know that cleaning efforts are underway in these 2 areas, isn't it? It's terrible that the pollution reached the level that it did, but there's improvement on the way, thank goodness.

We've had real concerns about the level of pollution in our Great Lakes in Canada. They are connected to each other and they are huge bodies of water which border with the United States. In the past we have been working with people in the States to try to clean them up but the current president has eliminated all of the funding for these projects so they've halted.
This is so very frustrating to Canadians!!!!!

We have to just keep on trying to find other ways to fund the work that needs to be done. Hopefully we'll manage to do so.

Meanwhile, I hope you're enjoying a super summer day and I'll continue to enjoy your blog.

    Cheers,

    Leslie
